Dear Facebook,
I have completed my 31 day challenge of staying off Facebook!
I’m not going to bore you with my pros and cons of Facebook usage. Those are my personal preferences anyway; I’m not sure if there is a point in sharing things like that. I mean, I could care less if someone has an issue with my personal preferences. : )
All I will say is that I will be returning to more or less life before I had a facebook page. I will still use it to share things that I think are awesome like websites and TED talks. I’ll post my personal opinion of course on current events and share my blog posts. I will continue to keep track of events happening around town that “GASP” I’ll make a public appearance too! Heaven forbid people actually get together and catch up in person. See, using social media just doesn’t satisfy my needs for socialization and human connection. I’m not the kind of person that likes to waste time on nonsensical chatter and small talk. Great, if we don’t have anything else useful to say, lets get on with our days. I don’t know about you but I have all of humanity to help…so….
And FYI, social media is a great way to spread information. But if half of the “activists” on social media actually got off Facebook and went to work in their communities, we would see real changes. That’s the kind of activist I am- I want to make real change in my community, not post endlessly about the things we ‘should’ be doing yet, not living it myself. I actually walk my talk and that can be incredibly frustrating at times. So many people talk big but act small. Words can be incredibly powerful things but they are only good and powerful IF they inspire people to make real and lasting changes in their communities. I’m not sure you can accomplish all of that solely from an electronic device; posting can only do so much.
So here are all the things that I wanted to share about my life while I was off Facebook:
-I read six books. My favorite was a picture book by Jon J. Muth called, Zen Shorts. You should check it out. Zen Shorts
-I finally got around to watching: Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Maleficent and Hidden Figures.
– I found some cool Ted Talks:
A black man goes undercover in the alt-right
See how the rest of the world lives, organized by income
Lots of Love,
Glenda
